After growing up in the Annapolis Valley, Dr. Thomas received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Acadia University while competing on the varsity men’s basketball team. He went on to complete his Doctor of Medicine at McMaster University, his family medicine residency at Queen’s University, and his sport and exercise medicine fellowship at the University of Ottawa. He has a Diploma in Sport and Exercise Medicine from the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CASEM), and a Certificate of Added Competence in Sport and Exercise Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
During his sport medicine fellowship, Dr. Thomas was the team physician for the University of Ottawa men’s basketball team and the Carleton University men’s lacrosse team. He also gained experience covering the 2022 CEBL Championship, the Ottawa 67’s, as the medical lead for the 2022 Ontario Summer Indigenous Games, and providing medical coverage for the 2023 North American Indigenous Games in Halifax.
As a primary care sport medicine physician, Dr. Thomas has expertise in diagnosing and managing sports injuries and various musculoskeletal conditions. A treatment plan can include rehabilitation with a therapist, medication, bracing, or musculoskeletal injections such as cortisone or hyaluronic acid.
In addition to assessing and managing various musculoskeletal conditions, Dr. Thomas has a special interest in ultrasound guided injections, orthobiologics, game and event coverage, and Indigenous health. Dr. Thomas lives in Port Williams with his family and enjoys staying active in triathlon, strength training, and golfing. Dr. Thomas will see patients at Acadia Sports Therapy starting in August 2023.
A referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is required to be seen by Dr. Thomas. Referral letters can be faxed to 902 585 1625, and this referral form may be used. MSI covers appointments with Dr. Thomas, but there may be fees for non-insured services not covered by MSI.
